Belo Horizonte is a fairly new city, built in 1897. It was planned by the architect Afonso Pena to become the new capital of the State of Minas Gerais. Back in the days, all buildings around Praça da Liberdade were designed to accommodate the administration of the State. Nowadays, though, Praça da Liberdade is the place for art, culture and history of the city. Make sure you visit the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil. Have a stroll around in the historical building and take a coffee break at the Café do Museu. Also take a look at the beautiful building Edifício Niemeyer, designed by the famous architect Oscar Niemeyer, hence its rounded edges in a beautiful flow with the horizon. It’s not surprising that the city has the same name, Belo Horizonte, aka ‘beautiful horizon’.
