Today, as I was walking by the canals in Bangkok, I spotted a Spirit Tree and decided to take a moment to appreciate it. Spirit trees, also known as Takian trees, are considered sacred and are rarely cut down for wood. People believe that ghosts reside inside them and can become angry if their wood is used without respect. Only monks are allowed to cut down a Takian, and they must ask for permission from Nang Ta-khian, the spirit within the tree, through a ceremony. She's usually kind, but if you don't show respect, she can turn mean and let out a scary shriek. Standing there, looking at the tree, I felt a connection between the city and this ancient tradition. It made me think about the stories hidden in the leaves and the balance between people and nature. It was a simple moment, but it felt like I was part of something bigger, where everyday city life met the old tales of the Takian tree.
