Apostle Islands National Lakeshore
Bayfield is the gateway to this magical group of 21 islands in Lake Superior and 12 miles of shoreline. Camping, kayaking, boating, fishing, and even scuba diving are some of the favorite things to do here in the warmer seasons. 🚣🏽‍♂️
The Apostle Island ice caves have not been accessible since 2015, but you can view them during a winter hike from above. There are 50 miles of maintained trails on the islands of the National Lakeshore with access to lighthouses, historic logging camps, beaches, camp sites, and, of course, stunning scenic overlooks!

The Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua is a 900-seat canvas tent theater that sits just outside Bayfield and hosts music, performances, and cultural events every summer, usually from June to September. It’s a throwback to tent shows and features nationally known artists, but also supports local and regional performers. It’s a magical place to experience live music in a setting that feels intimate and artistically historic!

Take the ferry over to Madeline Island, the largest and most populated of the 21 Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. The Madeline Island Ferry is a 25-minute ride from Bayfield to La Pointe on Madeline Island. Most days, the ferry runs at 9, 10, and 11 a.m., and 2 and 3 p.m. to the island, but always check the schedule before you go.
