Day 1: Arrive in Schörfling, Klimt's North Shore

Gustav Klimt center
The natural starting point for the whole trip. Opened in 2012 on the 150th anniversary of Klimt's birth, this museum in Schörfling covers his summers on the Attersee through photos, documents, textiles, original drawings, and a dedicated Klimt cinema. The world's first Klimt Garden sits directly adjacent to the Zentrum at the marina, a free outdoor installation where six of Klimt's paintings served as the basis for the planting design, with rose hedges, water lily ponds, and formal square beds. The current exhibition runs through October 2026. Open Wednesday through Sunday.

Villa Paulick Seewalchen
The villa where Klimt spent 16 summers alongside fashion designer and muse Emilie Flöge. Built in 1877, it's a private property today but opens for guided tours on Tuesdays from late June through mid-September, limited to small groups. Booking ahead is strongly recommended.

ATO Kammer/Attersee Schiffstation
The boat landing at Kammer marks the start of the Gustav Klimt Themenweg, a flat lakeside promenade walk connecting Schörfling and Seewalchen through 26 information steles tracing Klimt's summers on the Attersee. Some steles are fitted with square viewfinder cutouts, letting you frame the landscape the same way Klimt did with a cardboard viewer more than a century ago. Guided walks with a Klimt specialist run every Saturday in summer.

Right at the marina in Kammer, Langostinos is the best table on the north shore. Chef Christian Rutschetschin specializes in freshly caught fish from the Attersee, with whitefish, pike, and char as the regulars, alongside seasonal wild game and regional Austrian dishes. Day 2: On the Water, Cruise and Swim

Attersee-Schifffahrt (Büro am Bahnhof)
A fleet of excursion boats has been connecting the lakeside villages of Attersee for over 150 years. The north and south circuit routes can be taken separately or combined into a full lake loop, passing the Höllengebirge mountains, the historic summer villas, and the villages of Seewalchen, Nussdorf, Unterach, and Weyregg. Day tickets offer hop-on, hop-off flexibility, with food and drinks served on board.

Gustav Klimt - Themenweg Stele, Weißenbach-Forsthaus
Klimt spent the summers of 1914 to 1916 at this forester's house at the southern end of the lake and painted it twice. Just steps away is the Klimt-Platzerl, a bench marking the exact viewpoint from which Klimt painted the house in 1914. A quiet and tangible stop at the water's edge.

Strandbad Unterach
A free public lakeside bathing spot in the village of Unterach with clear water and mountain views. Attersee is one of the most pristine lakes in Austria, with drinking water quality, and warm enough to swim comfortably by June.

About 15 kilometers north of the lake in the village of Pfaffing, Die Schmiede holds two Gault Millau toques and is the most decorated table in the broader Attersee area. Worth the short drive.

Day 3: Hiking and Dark Skies

Jagastüberl am Buchberg
A well-marked circular route starting from the Atterseehalle in Attersee am Attersee, climbing to the Buchberg summit at 2,559 feet with sweeping views over the lake and the Salzkammergut mountains. About 8 kilometers with 1,380 feet of elevation gain, taking around two to two and a half hours. At the top, the Jagastüberl, a simple open wooden hut at the summit, is the spot to catch your breath and take in the panorama before heading back down.

Schloss Kammer
A 17th-century moated castle on a peninsula jutting into the lake near Kammer, surrounded by a chestnut avenue. Klimt painted it in a series of five works between 1908 and 1910, often from a boat using a telescope to compress the distance. Not open to the public but easily photographed from the promenade.

A nearly 200-year-old family-run restaurant in Nussdorf, now in its sixth generation, serving refined regional Austrian cuisine under ancient chestnut trees in a lakeside garden.
