The quintessential National Lentil Festival (NLF) is held every August in Pullman. Beginning as a float promoting the Palouse region's thriving lentil industry in a Fourth of July parade, the first NLF—held in 1989—established festival traditions that remain to this day, including the showcasing of lentil-based cuisine, cooking demonstrations, and a grand parade that introduced festival mascots: Tase T. Lentil, Chel C. Chickpea, and Dan D. Pea. What started as a small celebration of agricultural heritage has grown into one of the nation's premier food festivals! Today, the NLF brings together local businesses, artists, and organizations and features live music, entertainment, and culinary competitions. The Festival attracts lentil enthusiasts, chefs, and visitors from around the world, all of whom have the opportunity to indulge in a delicious bowl of lentil chili served from the Guinness World Records-certified “World’s Largest Chili Bowl” at 25 gallons!
