Day 1: Black Hills

Sylvan Lake Lodge
A 1937 stone and timber lodge sitting right at the top of Needles Highway. The lodge looks out over Sylvan Lake and sits close to trailheads for both Black Elk Peak and Cathedral Spires, a solid base for the day's hikes. Rooms are cozy and air-conditioned, with a restaurant, lounge, and general store on site.

Sylvan Lake
A lake ringed by granite formations rising straight out of the water. Swim, kayak, or paddleboard from the sandy beach, and the shoreline trail doubles as the main route up to Black Elk Peak. Fun fact: it played a starring role in National Treasure: Book of Secrets, standing in for a lake that supposedly sits behind Mount Rushmore, even though the real thing is a 30-minute drive away.

Black Elk Peak Trailhead
The route to the highest point in South Dakota, starting right at Sylvan Lake and climbing roughly 3.5 miles one way to a stone fire lookout at the summit. On a clear day, the view stretches into four states.

Cathedral Spires Trailhead
A moderate to strenuous 1.6-mile round trip that winds through a canyon of granite spires, with some rock scrambling along the way, so it's not quite the easy stroll it's sometimes made out to be. Keep an eye out for mountain goats, and note that the small trailhead parking lot on Needles Highway fills up fast.

Crazy Horse Memorial
A mountain carving depicting the Oglala Lakota warrior Crazy Horse on horseback, arm outstretched toward his people's ancestral lands. Carving began in 1948 and has continued for over 75 years, with only the face completed so far. The project is funded entirely through admissions and donations, having never accepted federal money. The complex also includes the Indian Museum of North America, covering the history of over 300 Native nations.

A small, chef-driven kitchen in downtown Custer that draws a devoted local following despite (or maybe because of) its tight 5-to-8 PM window, Tuesday through Saturday. "Skogen" means "the forest" in Norwegian, a nod to the pine country surrounding town, and reservations are essential given the limited seating.

Day 2: Black Hills

State Game Lodge
The oldest and largest lodge in Custer State Park, and genuinely historic: Calvin Coolidge ran the country from here for several weeks in 1927, dubbing it the "Summer White House," and Eisenhower visited in 1953. Rooms range from the original upstairs lodge rooms (including the actual Coolidge and Eisenhower rooms) to newer wings and creekside cabins, and the on-site restaurant serves South Dakota staples like buffalo, pheasant, and rainbow trout, with a full breakfast buffet each morning. It's also the departure point for the park's Buffalo Safari Jeep Tours.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial
Four presidents carved into granite between 1927 and 1941, Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln, each face standing roughly 60 feet tall. The Presidential Trail winds directly beneath the sculpture for the closest possible view, and worth knowing for a fall visit, the evening lighting ceremony only runs through September 30, though the faces stay lit nightly at sunset year-round.

Day 3: Badlands

Badlands Frontier Cabins
Individually decorated log cabins in Wall, each with its own picnic table, grill, and porch, most facing an open field that catches a wide, unobstructed sunset most evenings. Antler light fixtures and premium bedding fill out the rooms inside, and it's a short walk from Wall Drug and about six miles from the Badlands entrance.

What started as a 24-by-60-foot building has grown into a 76,000-square-foot maze of shops, still family-run, with the ice water (and 5-cent coffee) still free today.

Sagecreek Rim Road
A gravel road branching off past Pinnacles Overlook into the Sage Creek Wilderness Area, the best shot in the park at spotting free-roaming bison and one of its largest prairie dog towns. It's also where the Hay Butte Overlook and Badlands Wilderness Overlook sit, both far less crowded than the paved-road stops.

Yellow Mounds Overlook
A stretch of ancient seafloor mud, over 69 million years old, that weathered into a mustard-yellow soil once an inland sea drained away, colored by a mineral called goethite. The overlook sits along Badlands Loop Road and shows off the park's oldest and most colorful layers, yellow, purple, and gray bands stacked one on top of the next.

Pinnacles Overlook
One of the higher points along Badlands Loop Road, looking out over the Sage Creek Wilderness Area with the Black Hills sometimes visible on clear days. Big Badlands Overlook
The first stop for most visitors entering through the northeast entrance, and widely considered the best sunrise spot in the park, when early light hits the layered rock at a shallow angle and brings out the contrast between the reddish Brule Formation and the darker Chadron Formation beneath it. On clear days, Eagle Nest Butte is visible rising on the southeastern horizon.

Notch Trail
A 1.5-mile round trip that winds through a canyon before climbing a log ladder up to a narrow ledge, ending at a dramatic view over the White River Valley. It's ranked among one of the best short hikes in the park, though it turns treacherous when wet, so timing around dry weather matters here.

Window Trail
A short, easy quarter-mile round trip from the same trailhead as Notch and Door, ending at a natural opening in the rock wall that frames more of the park's eroded spires. One of the simplest hikes in the park, with no ladder or scrambling involved.

Door Trail
A quarter-mile boardwalk leading through a literal break in the Badlands Wall, called "the Door," out to a panoramic viewpoint. From there, an unmaintained path marked by yellow posts continues onto the exposed bedrock for those who want to keep going, with the full round trip running about three-quarters of a mile.

Fossil Exhibit National Recreation Trail
A flat, fully accessible boardwalk lined with fossil replicas from the Oligocene epoch, when the region was a tropical floodplain teeming with saber-tooth cats and elephant-sized mammals. The Badlands hold one of the richest concentrations of fossils anywhere in the world, and this trail's exhibits walk through what's been found here layer by layer.
