Entry to St. Peter's Square and the basilica is free. BUT...go early or late for shorter lines. The security lines are very long, especially during peak travel times. If the Pope is in Rome, he holds an audience on Wednesday mornings. While it's free, you do need to secure a ticket and pick it up with the Swiss Guards. It's a bit of a tricky process, but worth it.
