Caption: Creative Makers
Caption: I grew up with hand-thrown ceramics as an everyday part of my life. My mother and other family members were potters - working with lumps of earthen clay to create usable and beautiful pieces for our homes, and to sell for others to enjoy in their homes.
We used to have a giant brick wood burning kiln right beside our house, and I remember my mum staying up long into the night until the firing was done - many many hours of watching and tending the heat of the fire to get just the right temperature. Firing nights were exciting for us children. Looking into the little hole and seeing the pots with the hazey heat shimmering across them. Watching the cones slump to see if the temperature was right or not.

These are two of my favourite pieces in our home. Both by local potters -
names unknown...

Caption: #letsallsupportcreatives Artists, crafters & creative makers are paid only a third of the income as other incomes in Australia*. I think this is something that needs to be changed - through us as individuals supporting an artist or maker. By purchasing handcrafted works instead of mass-produced made in factories products we are choosing to help change our communities by valuing the heart that a maker brings to our society.
Spending a little more on one item, and buying less throw-away is a simple change to make in your life and shopping practices.
*i don't know the stats for other countries, but am sure it would be very similar as to in Australia. Artists average income is $25k, whereas 'regular' other income average is $69k.
