Located within Italy, but sovereign onto itself, San Marino is Europe's third smallest state and the world's oldest republic. It is also protected by UNESCO status.

I loved the architecture and understated grandeur of the hilltop republic. It is often known for its three towers, which have actually become symbols for San Marino. This photo was taken in one and looks out at another.

San Marino is accessible by bus and by car, overland. The nearest airport and train stations, that service San Marino, are in Rimini, on the coast of Italy.
