Caption: "There are monsters down there," the old man said to the boy.
They sat high on the bluff over the dark sea. It was a cold bluff, a place on only the most detailed maps.
Picture
Caption: "Where?" The boy asked.
"Down there," the old man said. "At the bottom of the ocean."
"What kinds of monsters?"
"Oh, all kinds. Big ones and small ones, mean ones and nice ones."
Picture
Caption: "Monsters can't be nice."
"They can be nice at first, and some of them are."
The boy sat up and collected himself, very maturely for such a little boy. "How do you know?" he asked.
Picture
Caption: The old man stared out at the end of the world and said, "I've read about some, I've been told about some others."
Then he added, as only a very old man can say, "And I've seen a few."
Picture
Caption: The boy looked up quickly as if reorganizing his whole idea of this old man in his head now that he had this new information.
"Do you want to hear about some of them?" the old man asked.
Picture
Caption: "Will I be scared?"
"Maybe a little. But I won't tell you about the very scary ones."
"Ok."
