Caption: In the Land of Fire and Ice: Part Ten THE HIKE TO HENGIFOSS
Caption: I looked up from my spot at the base of the Hengifoss hiking trail and saw a mass of cloud and fog approaching. Typical Iceland – the weather changing on a dime. Dismayed at the coming gloom, I began my hike.

Caption: Hengifoss is one of the highest waterfalls in Iceland, measuring 128 meters, falling from the plateau into a magnificent gorge. To reach Hengifoss, you must walk two and a half kilometers uphill.
Caption: A part of me wanted to race to reach the main attraction before the fog completely shaded it from view. But there were just too many other astounding sights to stop and photograph; that’s Iceland for you.

Caption: So I worked slowly, taking pictures of the valley, of the autumn foliage, of smaller waterfalls and of Litlanesfoss. All the while, the fog covered up more and more of the main attraction.
