Caption: In photographs, silhouettes are objects that are darkened or underexposed so that only the shape of the subject is visible. The interior of the object lacks detail, and is usually black. What is a silhouette?

Caption: Silhouettes can add a sense of simplicity, but power to your photos. They're easy to capture, too!

Caption: How to capture silhouettes with a phone...
1. Set your subject behind a source of bright light (a window or the sun itself will do)
2. On your phone, tap on the brightest part of your image (your light source). Don't have your phone autofocus because the subject may not be dark enough. You may need to take your picture with an app that allows both exposure control and focus (VSCOcam or Camera +), especially if your subject is close to the camera.
3. Once focussed, quickly take your picture, with the flash setting off. If you wait too long to tap the shutter button, your phone's camera may autofocus on the subject before you photograph it, making it look normal instead of underexposed.
4. Edit. My favorite apps to use are Snapseed, VSCOcam, and Afterlight. You can adjust brightness if your picture came out too bright, or you can add a black and white filter to it- it's really up to you. Experiment with edits that you like. Also, remember that oftentimes photos look fine as they are.
Tips:
•When shooting outside, the light source should be against, if not directly behind the subject. If the sun is high in the sky, try shooting low to the ground, although this doesn't always help. Sunset is the ideal time to photograph because the sun is already low in the sky and can easily hide behind your subject.
•Don't use flash 🚫
•Make sure that your subject's shape is obvious and pronounced.
•Contrast is a key component in silhouette photography, so make sure you have a bright light source.
•Have fun capturing silhouettes!
