Caption: Laila was discovered by legendary composer Mohammed AbdulWahab when she was 15 in 1938. He heard her singing and gave her a role in his movie "Viva Love" and shot to stardom. She was so loved by the people that producers put her name in the titles of her movies like "Laila the Student" and "Laila the Daughter of the Rich" among others.

Caption: The tough choice Laila & many like her had to make. During the 1940s, the call to all Mizrahi (Arab) jews to immigrate to Palestine started. Laila and her family among other Jewish families were startled to hear the news. They were quick to print out an announcement that they are Egyptian and their allegiance is to the Egyptian people. When asked on the radio of her point of view she stated "My religion and my God did not teach me to take what belongs to others. I am also an Egyptian. My roots trace back to hundreds of years. What business do I have going to Palestine? To each his own but I didn't approve of the British colonizing Egypt, and the Zionist movement is another Western ideology I don't approve of either"
The creation of the state of Israel however, created an unfortunate distrust between the Muslims and Christians of Egypt on one hand and the Jewish people the other.

Caption: The political shift made Laila's career vunerable. Just as anyone would expect, her rivals accused her of donating money to Israel's army and that she has been on a trip to the newborn Jewish state. Before a ruling in the case, Syria banned her music and films and the Egyptian radio (run by the Musician's Union) did the same

Caption: The Egyptian Court found Laila innocent of the accusations and ruled against her accusers and found them guilty of defaming a fellow citizen based on faith.
She was also chosen by the President after the Egyptian revolution to sing for the revolution as Egypt's Voice.

Caption: Laila continued to sing, act and tour the Arab World spreading joy and smiles as Arabia's indisputable sweetheart. She will always be a reminder that many of the Jewish people are family, sharing not only our bloodline, but history from the renaissance of the 1500s to centuries of hardships under different Imperialist regimes.
