is a city and municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland. The municipality of Leiden has a population of 122,000.
Leiden has historically been associated with the Roman outpost Lugdunum Batavorum. This particular castellum was however closer to the town of Katwijk, whereas the Roman settlement near modern-day Leiden was called Matilo.[6]
