Caption: I guess this story begins with a question: why #doortraits?
How did I develop a habit of taking photos of random doors?
Picture
Caption: #thedoorseries or #doortraits really begins with me saying thank you to a few people for introducing me to the concept.
Firstly, @absnthemndswd (@absinthemindedswede on Instagram) whose weekly stories, each with the cover image of a doorway - or a gate on 'week 46' - were some of the first I read and loved on @Steller. Every cover, every doorway, presented an invitation to read the story beyond.
Credit also goes to @elice_f (also on Instagram) who finds the most incredible urban architectural moments, including wonderful cars and doors.
And then in December my friend @LifestyleEditor started photographing a series of wreaths on doors. Such a simple and cool idea.

Caption: What did all these doors suggest about the interiors within? It's true that first impressions count. Show me a timber panelled door painted in a mellow shade of grey-green Farrow & Ball paint and I'm sold.
Especially when it has two letterboxes.

Caption: So I started photographing doors. All different types of doors. Around Edinburgh mostly, but also on trips down the east coast and in Fife. Some very grand. Others simply eye catching because of their patina or detail.

Looking back through these doortraits, I realise I'm drawn to certain features: rugged timber, black, greys, Georgian detailing.
Maybe there'll be more colour in #doortraits Part Two.
