Caption: Cave Bianche A Charming Hotel in Favignana
Caption: Favignana is one of the most beautiful islands of the Mediterranean.
Its rocks are amazingly picturesque
calcarenite stones,
which have been used for centuries
as a building material.
Favignana's mines have been mainly operated between 1700 and 1950. Calcarenite quarrying employed a great amount of stonecutters, some of whom worked in opencast mines, some others inside underground caves that stretched for hundreds and hundreds of meters.

has a close relation with the ocean:
fossil seaweed, shellfish, crustaceans’ shells, fish bones, radiolarians and other small unicellular beings are frequently part of the stones texture.

in Favignana.
Restored and protected as the living memory of an ancient tradition, some quarries are just spectacular.
Visiting a cave is a unique experience, as well as walking into the
garden-quarries, where herbs,
plants and capers, pomegranates, lemon trees and figs are grown, protected from the island's
strong winds.
