Caption: Greece is in the news a lot at the moment because of its economic crisis. The birthplace of democracy and Western philosophical thought has weathered many crises in its long history—the reminders of which are all around, as I saw on a recent trip to Athens. It is a country where the present coexists with the past.

Caption: An hour south of Athens is the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion. We watched the sun set over the Aegean Sea, a timeless view that has stayed the same as wars and crises have come and gone.

Caption: We enjoyed wandering in the maze-like streets of the Plaka district, on the slopes of the Acropolis. They are filled with colourful details and lovely restaurants where you can spend hours enjoying a good meal.
