Caption: SANJUSANGEN-DO
Caption: The wooden temple hall was last rebuilt in the 13th century and has withstood fire and earthquakes. Its 120m length houses 1000 statues of the 40 armed deity Kannon.
Photography isn't allowed inside, so you'll need to imagine the sounds of the city muted, dim light filtered through shōjī paper screens, air thick with incense, low chanting and candlelight glinting off 1000 pairs of eyes
Caption: Before entering the temple, worshippers purify themselves with the water of this natural spring named "The Spring Crying in the Night"
Listen and you'll understand why
