Helmets are a prerequisite and should be properly adjusted so that the straps are gathered just below the ears and the chin strap is securely fastened.

Picture
Caption: A helmet with proper coverage and an adjustable retention system are recommended. Dial in their fit, take the time to make it comfortable.

Always choose closed toed shoes, long sleeves and jeans. Proper riding gear should fit comfortably and protect their skin in case of a fall. Eyewear and gloves are helpful but can be challenging to get proper fit.

Caption: Your child should comfortably reach both feet to the ground and be able to support themselves before they are ready to roll. Adjust the saddle to accommodate, if they cannot reach it's too early.
Picture
Caption: If you've determined they can reach the ground while in the saddle you can help them learn to balance.
Start by positioning yourself behind the bike, pinching the rear wheel with your feet. Place the child on the saddle while holding their hands on the grips. Keep the bike still in a "track stand" position while using your knees to guide and keep them from tipping off the saddle or to either side.

A safe bike path is a great surface to start on, smooth pavement is predictable and builds confidence. One step at a time.
Picture
Caption: It's important to let them learn balance but stay close and even keep your hands on their bars so they learn to turn gently, not erratically.
Picture
Caption: Allow them to experience a variety of surfaces, you're never too young to appreciate Singletrack.
Picture
Caption: Let them learn at their pace, take breaks and bring snacks. Create a safe and supportive environment to learn in. One step at a time, everyone has their pace. Patience is a virtue.
Picture
Caption: As confidence builds the strides get bigger and the glides between are faster and longer in distance.
Picture
Caption: As you see skills grow, encourage new challenges that are within reach. Learn to stop by dragging the soles of the shoes on the ground. Create fun lessons that teach control, like stopping and starting on a line in the driveway.
Picture
Caption: Work on skills like coasting and standing. Choose a bike that has a steady platform for the feet. Have them keep elbows out, knees bent in a ready position.
Picture
Caption: I firmly believe that children should learn to stop before they learn to go fast. If a hand brake can be installed you can teach how to skid, which is fun, and in turn how to stop. Learning how to control speed is a fundamental cycling skill.
