St. Mary’s Cathedral, situated on the highest point of Kilkenny City, was made from local limestone and completed in 1857. Inside are beautiful works of art including a statue of the Madonna created between 1809 and 1873 by the famous sculptor, Giovanni Maria Benzoni.
If these walls could talk...
These walls were built in the 13th century by Anglo-Norman colonists. St. James's Gate, one of seven gatehouses on the walls of Kilkenny, was used to control people coming into the medieval city, as well as an entry point for collecting tolls. Gates were closed each night and opened again the next day.
