New Orleans LA
Established in 1854, makes this park the Nation’s oldest urban park. It encompasses a total of 1300 acres. Included is a Museum, Botanical Gardens, Amusement Park, Besthoff Sculpture Garden, lakes, fishing and more.
As many times as I have been to New Orleans, I don’t know how City Park escaped my notice. Located North of the Garden District, not too far, the trolley runs by it. It’s a haven of Oak trees and more.
City Park has the largest stand of mature oaks, which includes a Grand Oak, that is over 800 years old.
We missed out on the oldest still running wooden Carousel. It is a one-of-a-kind, hand carved flying horses. It has been in continuous use for over 100 years. It is part of the Amusement Park. Unfortunately it was locked up tight.
The Dueling Tree. Spanish and French young men, settled scores under this tree, with pistols or swords.
Two major events have impacted City Park. The most note worthy in my Generation is Hurricane Katrina. She left the park under flood waters for weeks. Damage to the park exceeded $43 million. The public’s out pouring of support not only repaired the Park, but improved it for the future generations.
