Staying in a leaning house

Amsterdam

Amsterdams’ soil is too soft to build on. Therefore houses are built on 10 to 20M deep piles driven into the ground to reach a solid layer of clay. It is claimed that due to climat change more lengthy periodes of dry weather cause the timber piles in the historic center to dry and rot. Especially last 2018’s summer. Therefore more and more houses tend to lean and tilt.

We stayed in Hotel Amstelzicht

The old part of the house leans for at least 10mm per M. When going upstairs, it felt like being drunk.

At first, you feel dizzy

The door is been tipped in the corner. Also, the door gets stuck half the way.

The stairs are rather steep
