in the fall
So it’s late October and you are sent to Lisbon for work. What is the obvious thing to do? Well, book the return flight three days late and spend some quality time in Portugal’s laidback capital! No need for a plan - just wing it. It will lead to chance meetings with good people and a very confused dog (which you will encounter right at the end of this story!).
After one more morning of work in the best office you can imagine - the Cascais marina...
... you head off to Lisbon itself, and simply drive the car all the way down to the Praca do Comércio, the main square on the north bank of the river Tagus. Then you drive up to the Castel S. Jorge where a pensioner offers you to guard the car for the rest of the day...
You bump into friends from work right in the urbex oasis called the Pátio de Dom Fradique. The result is that you see the sun set from the brilliant Miradouro Portas do Sol vantage point, sipping white wine with the girls while the sounds of fado drift down towards the river. Then you all end up in a quaint restaurant in the Bairro Alto called Tascardoso. What a night.
The next morning you drive up to Sintra to go all the way up to the Castelo dos Mouros. After lunch, you hit the road for Belém, a coastal suburb west of Lisbon, where you first visit the mighty Mosteiro dos Jeronimos. And then you wait for sunset at the tower from which the Portuguese explorers were once waved goodbye as they sailed off towards territories unknown.
The monument for the explorers...
And that magical Torre de Belém...
Your final day starts on the south bank of the Tagus, in Almada, where you first think you’ve ended up in Rio de Janeiro and then have the sensation of being in San Francisco. But you’re not. In the afternoon, the riverside business district of Parque das Nacões adds a totally different perspective to your view of Lisbon.
And that confused dog? Here it is.
BYE BYE, LISBON
Back to the airport, back to everyday life
Or shall we stay for a little while longer?
