New Zealand’s North Island

One week of stunning scenery

In 2017, we got the chance to visit New Zealand for a full month. Most of that time was spent road tripping the South Island, but we did get one full week on the North Island. We would have loved more time, but one week gave us a great taste of just how amazing New Zealand’s North Island is.

Waiheke

An island full of beaches and wineries? Yes, please! Just a 30-minute ferry from Auckland, Waiheke Island was our first stop during our North Island tour.

Sculpture Walk

Before hitting the wineries, we hiked along the Sculpture Walk. We saw amazing displays of art surrounded by incredible views.

Time For Wine!

After our sculpture walk, it was time to sit back, relax, and enjoy some wine and scenery. This video is from Cable Bay Vineyards.

Man O’ War Vineyards

This was easily our favorite winery. With a location right by the beach, quality wines, and affordable prices, Man O’ War has it all!

After a couple nights on Waiheke, it was time to hit the road! Our destination: the world-famous Hobbiton set from the Lord of the Rings movies. As a lover of both the books and movies, I couldn’t wait to go back to Hobbiton! I had been there once before in 2013, but the 2nd time around was even better. We did the evening banquet tour, which included a dinner and drinks at The Green Dragon.

Hobbiton

Hobbit Holes

Each of the hobbit houses has its own unique charm. The plants add such a perfect pop of color! Peter Jackson and his team did an amazing job of capturing the spirit of the books.

The amount of detail is incredible. So many of these pieces were only in the films for 1-2 seconds, if at all.

In the books and films, The Green Dragon was the social spot to eat, drink, & be merry (LotR pun intended) with friends. So that’s exactly what we did!

The final stop on our North Island road trip was the Coromandel Peninsula. We stayed at an amazing home for our 2 nights. I’d suggest taking an afternoon to soak in the Lost Spring Hot Pools and be sure to enjoy a short hike down to the world-famous Cathedral Cove.

The view from our porch.

Cathedral Cove

Easily one of the most picturesque spots in New Zealand, Cathedral Cove is accessed by hiking, kayaking, or taxi boat. We woke up early, trekked down the 30-minute walk to the cove, & had nearly the whole area to ourselves.
