Gone Sailing

River Tagus, Lisbon

The last day of a week's holiday in Lisbon, Portugal An afternoon's cruise in a sailing boat from Belém, on the River Tagus

Doca do Bom Sucesso, Porto de Lisboa (Marina of Good Success, Port of Lisbon)

Torre de Belém (Tower of Belém) A tower built to defend the mouth of the Tagus. Originally mid-river, it now stands on the shore as the river shifted course in the 1755 earthquake.

It was sunny, thirty degrees and serene on the river. The engine had been turned off; we were under sail only. Our 11-year old steered a yacht of 12 metres and managed to avoid container ships, the timetabled ferry and the pillars of the bridge while our captain entertained us with drinks and stories about Lisbon.
