Milford Sound is an eerily quiet, moody place. It's a fjord on the west coast of New Zealand's South Island, far away from the rest of the world.
Sliding through dark waters, you're surrounded by steep cliffs that reach into the clouds. Lush green plants cover the surrounding hills, & waterfalls cascade down the rock face.
Cruising through Milford Sound is the best way to see it. The boats move slowly up & down the fjord. They move in close to the waterfalls; if you're in the right (or wrong) spot, you can feel the spray of the falls.
Milford Sound is one of the wettest places on earth, & that's part of what makes it so magical. Temporary waterfalls appear after the rain, and everything is a deep blue or green.
