Milford Sound is one of the most-visited attractions in all of New Zealand. One of the best parts about it is that weather rarely has a negative effect on the experience. When the sun shines, the colors pop and the majestic mountains can be seen all the way to the peaks. When it rains, Milford Sound becomes a moody spectacle, with hundreds of new waterfalls cascading down the cliffs.
After leaving Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu, you will soon enter Fiordland National Park for one of the most stunning drives of your life.
This kea couldn't have picked a better spot to pose for me!
Waterfalls become commonplace
when it rains in Fiordland. And around Milford Sound, they measure the rainfall in meters. As a comparison for all of our US readers - Milford Sound gets nearly 7x as much rain as Seattle!
The result of all that rain? Lots of green in the surrounding woods!
Once you arrive at Milford Sound, you have a variety of options. You can kayak or, for a unique perspective, take a scenic flight over the fiord. There are also numerous boat tours available, all of which have indoor/outdoor seating options. We went with Cruise Milford for our tour.
The gorgeous drive back to Queenstown along Lake Wakatipu.
Up next: we drive along the other end of Lake Wakatipu, toward the tiny town of Glenorchy. There, we went horseback riding, skydiving, and, of course, hiking. Those stories are coming soon!
