In the beginning...
The park system began with Piestewa Mountain & Park North Mountain Park as county parks. Most of the existing municipal park system were acquired in the early 1970s.
My boyfriend enjoying a break & some breath taking views💙
The mountains pictured in this story are from the Dreamy Draw Recreation area. The highest point in this Recreation area is Piestewa Peak at 2,608 feet. Originally, this area was used for mining & grazing, & it did not become a possession of the city of Phoenix until 1959. During this time, the area was annexed & a long-term lease agreement was signed with the state of Arizona.

The name originated from the neurological effects suffered by miners who worked the area's cinnabar (mercury sulfide) mine.
