the great west

August 2016 Our road trip starts from Calgary and ends in Vancouver. Many kilometers, incredible roads so close to glaciers! A vastness we Italians are not used to. Canada was a dream for us and our imaginary was plenty satisfied by what we saw.

Hiking in Jasper NP is amazing!

After a quite long hike through the Larch Valley near Banff, Alberta, we reached the Sentinel pass. What we saw in front of us, beyond the pass, was breathtaking...

A must-do for travelers who love photography is a walk around the Moraine Lake. The early morning light is the best, because it enhances the brightness of the blue-green color of the water, that is due to glacial rock flour.

Medicine Lake

It is not actually a lake but an area in which the Maligne River backs up and suddenly disappears underground. A geologic anomaly!

This area is full of wonderful lakes. The most impressive for me was Peyto Lake, a huge lake fed from the Peyto Glacier. It gives the water a magnificent turquoise-blue color in the summer, due to the mineral content.

The Icefields Parkway is the primary north-south route through the Alberta Rockies and one of the most spectacular scenic drives in the world. It goes across the Banff and the Jasper National Parks for 232km/144mi

The long and winding road

During our mountain trails we run into many spectacular water falls. My favorite was the round trip hike from Takakkaw Falls to Twin Falls in Yoho NP, British Columbia. It took 6 hours walking, incredibly satisfying!

Athabasca River runs through Jasper NP. Its name means "where there are plants one after another" Indeed!
