Story of the Photo

The following is a short story about photographing Arthur's Seat and the Salisbury Crags in Edinburgh in September 2016.

In a symbolically pivotal scene of the movie Braveheart, William Wallace bounds across the top of a mountain range in Scotland to the tune of a bagpipe-dominated musical score. The scene ends with him standing upon a high crag, perched at what seems like the top of Scotland, as the music builds to a crescendo. The camera slowly pans around William, revealing the highlands in all their glory.

I keep a mental bucket list of travel goals I want to accomplish in my life. For as long as I can remember, running through the Scottish Highlands while listening to the Braveheart theme as been #1 on that list. I finally got a chance this September. My family and I toured the country for a week but a weird a thing happened.

We had so much to see and do that all of sudden the trip was almost over and I hadn't taken that jog. On my last day in the country, I decided to walk up to the top of Arthur's Seat. Formed by an extinct volcano, Arthur's Seat provides a panoramic view of the city.

As I finished the arduous ascent and scrambled up the sun-drenched rocks to the peak's highest point, I heard a familiar sound: bagpipes. The theme from Braveheart had begun, blasting through my headphones via iTunes Shuffle. Now, I only had like eight songs on my iTunes so the odds of this happening weren't small but I'm still going to call it fate. And fate was glorious.
