Bucking Horse Sale in Miles City, Montana

Want to take a deep dive into the Cowboy culture? Head to Miles City in eastern Montana the third weekend of May for the annual Miles City Bucking Horse Sale.

As the name implies, the heart of the event is to auction off horses and bulls to rodeo stock contractors. But it has grown over the years to become a rip-roaring gathering of any and all who appreciate the Way of the West.

The auction is run like a rodeo – with the horses and bulls being bucked, then the bidding starts. An exceptional bucking horse (or stud) can bring up to $10,000.

In between the rodeo action, there is mutton bustin’ for the kids, wild horse races for daredevils, and horse racing for those with cash to bet.

In addition to the auction, the weekend features a colorful, quirky parade and a quick draw art auction.

The evening scene on Miles City’s Main Street takes on a festival atmosphere with food vendors, bands blaring, and folks kicking up their heels in Western swing.
