PIE DAY 2016

A newbie's perspective

I won my invitation to Pie Day 2016 in a fundraising raffle for a Syrian refugee family. Truly a win-win! I'd observed the Asian Food Mob in action on previous Pie Days via social media, so I thought I knew what I was in for. Well, the reality eclipsed the expectation! These ladies (and a few gents) are seriously committed foodies, with strong design and organizational skills, and a wonderful aesthetic. I'd like to say I fit right in - well, except for the not being Asian part! What follows is a "taste" of the day.

Jen's Karipap (Curry Puffs)

Edythe's Pork & Mushroom Wedding Pie

Jesslin & Zeekid's Chicken Pot Pie à la Thomas Keller

Vanessa's Burek

Bonita's Swiss Chard, Ham and Gruyère Slab Galette Previous page: Andrew's Steak Pie

JoAnne's Brisket, Black Bean and Corn Empanadas

Dan's Yorkshire Pudding Pie Previous page: Cindy's Wild Mushroom Pie

Cindy's Coconut Custard Pie

Jesslin & Zeekid's Dufflet Ginger Pear Tart

Yvonne's Egg Tarts

Bonita's Salted Honey Pie

JoAnne's Chocolate-Caramel-Almond Tart with Fleur de Sel

Top: Andrew's Apple Pie Bottom right: Edythe's Rhubarb & Raspberry Frangipane Tart with Almond Praline

Elena's Chocolate & Nut Pie (also on cover)

Art-directing the table and photography kept us all busy. Then we moved on to enjoying the savoury pies as lunch, sampling the sweet pies and preparing our take-home slices. Thank you, everyone, for being so welcoming. I loved it!
