About 2 hours north of Christchurch New Zealand, is the small picturesque seaside town of Kaikoura. The word 'Kaikoura' means 'meal of Crayfish,' and is named so being that Kaikoura is the crayfish capital of the world. 🦀
It is a wildlife enthusiasts' dream! There is an abundance of marine life here, including countless numbers of New Zealand Fur Seals, which you can get up pretty close to. There are also Dolphins, Whales, a variety of bird life, and sometimes even Orcas.
Our favourites were the seals. So cute and lazy, with whole colonies sleeping on rocks and basking in the sun as far as the eye can see.
Alongside loudly squawking sea gulls by the thousands
We joined Whale Watch Kaikoura to see if we could see the iconic Sperm Whale (the kind which inspired tales such as Moby Dick)
Our captain listening for Whales
Soon enough we found one who had re-surfaced. This is Tiaki, the most famous Sperm whale in the world (he appears in most of the sperm whale documentaries)
We also saw many Wandering Albatross. These huge and majestic sea-birds ride the air currents above the water with such grace
After our boat ride we drove another 20 minutes north to Ohau point, where a short walk takes you to a cascading waterfall and protected pool where young seals play and learn vital skills for surviving in the open ocean.
The water here in Kaikoura is such a stunning colour
This little town has such a vibrant atmosphere and some pretty cool buildings as well! We have loved every second spent here and will definitely return!
Kaikoura will always hold a special place in our hearts X
