Who am I to argue with three wise men?

THE PERFECT NEW BABY GIFT... #MatExpAdvent-ures Day 19

Babies are babies. The needs of newborn babies are very simple and do not really change much over time. But fashions do. After all, once it was thought cool to take a new baby gold, frankincense and myrrh. As you do. But now it probably seems a bit last millennium. Or a millennium or two before.

So what three gifts would be perfect for a new baby in 2016?

Three wise women would have got there on time and brought some useful gifts πŸ˜‰

Perhaps we could get a bargain?

Matching hat, mitts and bootees?

You can take ages going through catalogues to come up with the perfect idea.

And then be horrified at the cost! πŸ‘€

Don't lose any more sleep. It is really very simple. #MatExp has the answers πŸŽ…πŸ»πŸŒ²πŸŒŸ

Three ideas that are simple, inexpensive and make a lasting difference. #MatExp Magic πŸ’œπŸŒŸπŸ’₯πŸš€

Firstly: optimal/delayed cord clamping. It will improve the baby's immediate and long-term health. Not a bad gift!

Hannah is a student midwife and it was great to tell a group of student midwives about her at the RCM conference. It just proves that anyone can do anything in #MatExp. You don't have to be a senior manager!

So proud of our fabulous #MatExp champions Hannah Tizard and Amanda Burleigh. It was brilliant to celebrate with them at the 'Fab NHS awards ceremony'

Secondly we have 'Wait to weigh'. What is the enormous rush to know exactly how much a baby weighs the second he or she is born? Cui bono? For whose benefit? If you are the new baby, be honest… Would this be a top priority? 😳

One of the poems I have written as part of Whose Shoes (maternity) tool to get everybody discussing and learning together and co-producing improvements in health and care

And then the fantastic #SkintoSkin campaign, championed by my wonderful friend Jenny Clarke @JennytheM

If you ever get the chance to hear Jenny speak, you are in for a treat. You always are when people talk with passion and love!

Meanwhile watch the video of how Jenny climbed a step-ladder and wrote #SkintoSkin on the operating theatre walls to make her change stick!

So keeping warm as a newborn doesn't have to be over complicated!

And now this lovely, very simple idea avoiding unnecessary admission to neonatal care at Sherwood Forest hospitals.

Qualities of our #MatExp #WhoseShoes super campaigners πŸ˜‰

And if you want more ideas about improving maternity services, the London Strategic Clinical Network have just published a booklet with ten of the best practical, transferable actions that have come from our #WhoseShoes #MatExp workshops

I will add the link as soon as available but here is the original toolkit
