Northern Michigan

America's other West Coast

The area around Traverse City is a wonderland of lakes and forests. I was fortunate to spend several weeks exploring the area this summer.

Along the shore of Lake Michigan one finds lots of pebbles and drift wood.

In the lower right you see some of the thousands of people who come to experience Lake Michigan beaches. Others find artistic inspiration.

Point Betsie Lighthouse is a favorite place to watch sunsets.

Miles of rivers await exploration by kayak or canoe.

We were delighted to find turtles taking a little afternoon sun.

The Platte River empties into Lake Michigan. In the distance is the Sleeping Bear Dunes.

At Sleeping Bear Dunes you can hike 2.5 miles across the sand from Glen Lake to Lake Michigan.

Looking north from the Empire Bluff gives an awesome view of "The Big Lake."

Leland, a delightful old fishing village. Be sure to try the smoked whitefish.

The Leelanau Peninsula is becoming a destination for wine enthusiasts.

Wherever you visit in Northern Michigan, make sure to spend one evening watching the sun set over Lake Michigan.
