Caption: I first learned of Jane’s Carousel when I was pregnant with Henry + Marie, and have been wanting to take them there ever since. Built in 1922 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, it was originally installed at a park in Youngstown, Ohio. It was bought at auction in 1983 by Jane + David Walentas, who have thoughtfully + painstakingly restored everything to it’s original glory. Housed in an incredible glass enclosure, it is situated in the most beautiful spot in the Brooklyn Bridge Park – the views are incredible. You can add this to the long list of why I love Brooklyn so much.

Caption: I tend to be a purist with most things in life, and while many carousels feature multiple types of animals, I love that this one is horses only. Each one is so intricately detailed – look how beautiful they are! Hand scraping during the restoration revealed the original 1922 palette and elegant wood carvings, and careful color-matching and planning brought each piece back to life. They sit proudly on their perch.

Caption: The organ is one of my favorite features of the carousel, and I learned it’s an original (German) Gebrueder Bruder. It plays a huge variety of songs (many of them polkas), and they all have an infectious energy.

Caption: We all had so much fun, and at only $2 per ride (children 3 and under free), you can’t top it. You can walk down to Juliana's for pizza + Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory for ice cream, stop at the playgrounds, people watch, and take in the sights. It makes for a perfect Brooklyn day, or weekend for that matter! Since it’s open year round (and is heated), we plan to visit again soon!
