Make do & mend
a community art installation by the local community of the Scenic Rim, Queensland
When my textile artist friend Bec was asked by our local council to come up with a community art installation with the theme: 'Make do & Mend' which related to the times in the war, when one just had to make do, Bec come up with a brilliant idea! #stellerlocal
What if the community would come together and knot a shaggy rug with leftover fabric.
And what if we would get everyone involved making 20.000 beads to make a fly screen curtain.
While Fifi, Bec's cat was overlooking everything...sort of.
Of course there will be a lovely gathering with endless cups of tea & scones with jam & cream.
Plus little helpers.
An old rocking chair, found on the side of the road to be recovered with used second hand denim.
It was amazing to see, how everything came together. The beads hanging on a string, endless knots where made & the rug was taking shape.
Needless to say, everyone worked really hard.
Finally the curtain was up & the rug with the chair was placed under it.
Even the chair got beautifully re-covered! Fifi was pretty happy with the result.
The installation was showcased at the Arts Centre at Beaudesert, Queensland thanks to 50 local woman. When sitting on the rocking chair, looking through the colourful beads, you can also listen to the stories Bec recorded about woman in the war, who 'Made do & Mend' Thanks for stepping by.
