ON LAKE TIME
Squam Lake, NH
At the end of a three-hour drive, a long dirt road, and a winding driveway, you'll find a tucked-away cove where five households of my extended family have lived for six generations.
For a few weeks in August, all sixty-odd of us gather from our respective corners of the globe (yes, globe) and fill our sun-drenched days with swimming, mountaineering and each other's precious company.
This is the first summer since I was ten that we've had a boat. I'm ecstatic, because it lets us do so much more...
Squam is the place that has remained constant throughout my life, that has brought me together with my far-flung family time and again. It's why Augusts are sacred for me. I am beyond lucky. I never forget it.
"At the end of the day, your feet should be dirty, your hair messy and your eyes sparkling."
