Red Pine

This past weekend, @cory_harmon and I explored Utah's Wasatch Mountain Range. Our quest was simple, summit Pfeifferhorn, aka "Little Matterhorn"

We started at Red Pine trail head, elevation 7650 feet Pfeifferhorn summit, 11,326

We shared the trail with this back country ripper.

Before we continue... Pfeifferhorn is pronounced /FY- fur/ Or, as in Michelle Pfeiffer

Our back country skier friend was in a hurry. ...we were not.

We continued on our way to Red Pine Lake, and then on to Pfeifferhorn Peak.

Within a few miles we were greeted by snow pack, and met up with our back country skier friend.

Wait... Swipe back one. Do you hear that noise? That's the sound of rushing water beneath the snow.

We arrived at Red Pine Lake with Pfeifferhorn Peak in the distance with knife-edge ridge to the right.

Pfeifferhorn Peak. Elev 11365 ft.

Drunken Trees caused by unstable earth.

We decided not to summit due to unstable snow. Pfeifferhorn, you won this round. We'll be back soon for that summit. be continued.

  • karen

Wow very cool - that photo on page 13 is amazing!

  • iloveutah

@spectatia_ thank you Anne! There will be a part 2!

  • iloveutah

@cairofoster thanks buddy, appreciate it. You'll have to let me know your plans in July. Let's get out!

  • iloveutah

@karen thanks Karen, the ice was emerald blue. Just an amazing place. One of the best back country lines is the northeast face of Pfeifferhorn. They actually filmed a movie here back in the 60ies because it looked like the Swiss Alps.

  • ghostedout

    Oh yes. Enjoyed this one.

  • Backcountry

That knife edge ridge is quite spicy! Good luck on round 2. 👍

  • jsmithphoto

I had plans to attempt Pheifferhorn last weekend too. My plans changed, haha. Hopefully I can make it up there sometime this summer!

  • irockutah

    Excellent buddy 👊🏼

This is great, Kenyon. Love it. @Orbitz. Hey now, don't make "old man Harmon" bring those poles to Canada! 👴🏻😆

  • ninagraceless

This is beautiful! Perfect theme for this story. I also love what you did with the cover!

  • iloveutah

@Orbitz thanks Toban! Old Man @cory_harmon rocks.

  • iloveutah

    @irockutah thanks buddy. 👊

  • iloveutah

@ghostedout hey thanks Matt, glad you liked it.

  • iloveutah

@Backcountry Can't wait for round 2, then we'll see how spicy knife edge ridge really is. I like that angle of pfeifferhorn from knife edge. And thanks!

  • iloveutah

@jsmithphoto we're going to try it again in a few weeks. Snow should be mostly gone by then.

  • iloveutah

@cory_harmon thanks buddy. I had an awesome time. Can't wait to do it again.

  • iloveutah

@ninagraceless Nina, thank you! Glad you liked the cover. This area is simply amazing. Just dramatic views and glacial erosion everywhere.

  • jgboyer

Well... I hate to be the bearer of bad news- but that peak you saw isn't the Pfeifferhorn- you gotta hike up that ridge and then up another one. But- Good news! That means you get to hike more! It's way cool up there and pretty exposed so it's worth the extra effort. The hike to Redpine is always good though.

    Great one!👌🏼
