tiny little flying machines
fixation: passion: infatuation
I am mildly obsessed with hummingbirds... In fact: "mildly" might be an understatement. I love hummingbirds. I love their sparkly and colorful outfits... I love their unique personalities... I love how they suddenly appear right in front of me and then just as suddenly disappear like the wind
1/2 ballerina... 1/2 helicopter
The twists, the twirls, the diving and the hovering.... It looks like an intricate dance...
I heart flowers
Nectar is to hummingbirds what gold doubloons are to pirates. They will defend a hummingbird feeder or flowering plant against all other customers. Viciously.
Can't we all just get along?
Don't let this adorable fuzzy face fool you. Hummingbirds are extremely territorial. They use their sharp beaks to jab at each other.
Hummingbirds have very distinct personalities... This guy was like a cranky old grandpa >
Hey lady! Enough with the click click and the talking: I'm trying to sleep!
I spend a great deal of time looking up into the trees. Before I started making photos of birds I never knew how many little birds were hiding in the trees. Carefully and quietly observing. They are easy for me to spot now. But at first, natures camouflage kept me busy... Always playing "Where's Waldo" ... The bird version
.... How perfectly this birds feathers match her tree... Which came first? The feather color? Or the tree? Do hummingbirds spend their entire lives looking for a tree to match their feathers? Or can they change their feather colors by sheer will? "Maybe she was born with it: maybe it's Maybelline "
what a beautiful outfit
The bird tattoo parlor
This bird had markings on her neck shaped exactly like sunflowers. I had to rub my eyes when I first saw this photo on my computer screen. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It had to be fake, right? Only problem was that I took the photo. So I knew it was real. Obviously my next thought was "hummingbird tattoo parlor?" Then I thought: "naw, those hummingbird moms would never let their babies get tattoos..."
Hummingbirds are such curious little creatures... I love how they often appear to be studying me as closely as I am studying them. I had my back to this fence. I was utterly focused on capturing photos of the two hummingbirds darting around the bottlebrush tree in front of me. All of a sudden I got the feeling that I was being watched. I turned around slowly and found this fuzzy guy studying me from an arms length away.
The birds and the bees.. And some heart shaped leaves
Hummingbirds and bees are not friends. I watched the bees gang up on this bird and attack him.
Hummingbirds eat insects. But I imagine eating a bumblebee is the bird equivalent of eating a Serrano pepper in the human world... Quite a rush: but one wrong inhale and you're left feeling like your brain is on fire
