film is too expensive.

Fujifilm is currently experiencing a shortage of film.

So am I.

I left with one roll of film

13 dollars.

would be practical and sensible and certainly less conducive to a barren coin purse.

Convenience stores have stopped carrying film, where I've been told that it's a "dying art" (and also asked, "What's that?"). The photo supply shop staff chuckled (at me?), saying, "All teenagers love film right now." I hate these experiences. They're uniquely irritating, not least in that they make me fear I'm becoming the textbook example of Hipster (n): "Nobody is intellectual enough to appreciate true art!" Sob, sob. What a tragedy.

stop waxing poetic about film and go take some pictures.

apologies for this dull set of texts. it's the last day before school starts and I just want a non-rainy day to take some pictures. alas - it's a hard life!

Great story, whenever I go shoot medium format and stuff it's incredibly hard to get my hands on. The film camera with the viewfinder at the top, what is that ? :)

  • hana

It's a Ljubitel from 1940-ish that my grandmother owned. Thus far I've only shot through the viewfinder with a digital camera, haha.

  • davehumphrey

    Lovely, really!

  • ilacorticelli

    Beautiful camera ☺️✨

  • cascosi

I love your camera and I love film too! I use Ilford black and white film for my old cameras. You can buy that online for about 9 bucks. ✌️

  • mirroredlight

    loved this!

  • hana

@cascosi yeah, I think online is probably the best place to buy film... and hopefully it'll be cheaper if I buy in bulk somewhere...

  • TheLilCharmkin

I'm not a teen but I feel the same angst! Lovely that you have and use (no matter the form) the vintage camera from your great grandmother. ❤️

  • tifforelie

Your layouts are flawless!! 💛 Loved this!!

  • hana

@tifforelie :') Thank you so much!! Every time I see your stories or photos I sigh and think, "Of course - perfect as usual." hehe

    Awesome ...#film

  • supperwmichelle

Beautiful ... and I agree...there is not like the sound of film cameras. Nor is there anything like the look of film shots. ☺️ #filmisnotdead

I agree wholeheartedly with this post. I like the idea of shooting film due to the fact that you need to really really understand and know your camera. Like a friend. You don't have the option to delete and try a different shutter speed. It's a beautiful thrill to discover what you have been able to create just over instinct. I like the idea of truly developing the skill behind photography.

  • jonas_heller

great choice of pictures! love that!

  • hana

@jonas_heller thank you!! @faeost agree! And it's like anything else, the less there is of something, the more valuable it feels, so it's nice to only have one or two film images of a particular moment as opposed to hundreds!

  • ritakovtun

hah! totally know how you feel. I fell in love with shooting film in a high school darkroom, but it's certainly an expensive, as well as dying, hobby.

  • justinfennert

Absolutely agree! It's only a lost art to those who create for others and are in a hurry for results. I guess the price has something to do with that which is unfortunate. Love the story though.

  • barce

I'd go for getting film in bulk, and the chemicals & equipment you need to develop your own film. Saves lots of $$$ in the end.

  • kweenkelly

@fidgetybrigitte and this is eventually going to be the story of my life.

  • Magic0wl

Hanna, your an artist no matter what. I have passion + appreciation, shine on ✨ and cheers to your love of film. I share in that adoration 📷

  • Magic0wl

I meant to say *you have passion and appreciation 😬

  • tallieimages

#filmisnotdead - Amazon or eBay is where I get medium format 120 or 220 film. beautiful story!!

  • soundzlikemez

No no no it's a myth that film is more expensive than digital. I shoot professionally and 80% is film. Shooting digital means hard core computer, editing software, hard drives, online back ups, cf cards, updating to latest tech every 3-5 years, did I mention hard drives and back ups up the wazoo?!?! Film can be practical and economical - buy your film online (b&h) in big numbers - it's way cheaper, and learn to develop black and white yourself - soooo cheap. Don't give up on film! ❤️📷

  • kitchensync

Speaking right to me with that one. I have a local shop that I go to and buy their expired rolls for SUPER cheap. And because people don’t shoot it as much, it means more expired rolls for me!
