Meet Emily Saunders
Meet New York City-based designer Emily Saunders and peek into the world of her namesake label SAUNDER...
My name is Emily Saunders, three years ago I started a women’s wear line called SAUNDER, work a lot, and I love it, but when I’m not working I love to spend time with my friends just hanging out, having a whiskey and laughing. I am obsessed with music, everything from The Mills Brothers to Kenny Rogers – there has to be music playing at all times in my life. I love to dance, if you want to see me grinning like a fool it will be when I’m dancing or watching some good live music. I love to travel and be adventurous.
I’m afraid of boredom, but that’s not to say that I don’t enjoy being mellow, I do. I enjoy cooking and watching sci-fi movies with my boo, and once a week I like to go to the Russian and Turkish baths for a body melting shvitz. The things that I value most in life are friends that are kind and loyal, unconditional love from family, creativity, happiness and adventure.
For me, inspiration comes in two forms, there is the subtle, creeping inspiration, the kind that crawls into your ear and lays eggs in your subconsciousness and there’s the kind of lightning strikes inspiration that bolt and causes you to grab a pen and paper and write feverishly until you’ve made sure it’s all down in black and white. The slow building inspiration is usually how I decide on my creative theme for each season, and the lightning bold stuff is usually how I work within that theme.
I don’t think you can practice modern fashion without referencing the fashion of the past, whether it’s intentional or not. Let’s be honest, no one is going to revolutionize the pant anytime soon. I look back a lot at design from the past, and I find it very inspirational.
