Painting Watercolor With Resist!

My set up for using liquid resist! Using this technique requires a set of cheap brushes and a jar of soapy water nearby!

Painting on the resist! For this piece I'm staying loose and gestural here, knowing that whatever is painted with the resist will remain white in the end.

Once the resist dries, it's time to lay on the watercolor! Always the best part, seeing the clear resist through every stroke.

Adding some smaller shapes with the larger ones to create interest and variation.

Layering on a few more colors to create some depth. One of my favorite aspects of this medium is how translucent it is.

Now for the reveal! Once the painting has dried, I use a rubber square here to take off the masking fluid. There's nothing like the satisfaction of seeing the crisp, white shapes underneath!

Finished!
