Week twenty five (and week thirteen)
was a week of (mostly) blue skies. The
ash lagoons had been transformed with
the arrival of summer as the areas of
grassland had become meadows of tall
grasses edged with clover. This all
sounds lovely but if you have
hayfever you’ll know there’s another
side to this. I can’t recall a summer of
hayfever like this summer, but then
I’ve never had a summer of walks like
these. Bracken was struggling to
breathe too, which was tough to see
and it meant that he had to stay home
more while we walked Harris solo. But
we also had a few pollen-lite walks
along the sea front, and some lovely
evening light.

The next photo is one of my
favourites from this week. The two
spaniels in front were together,
and they hit the beach running,
full tilt, crazy excited. It was low
tide and they ran all the way out to
the water’s edge and back at full
speed, followed by a golden
retriever who’d been walking with
his/her family. The three of them
careened back to shore in a moment
of freedom and joy, reminding me to
find both in the simplicity of
these everyday walks.

Looking over the sea wall at the
lagoons at low tide, watching the
birds that feed out at the edge of
the water. I’ve come to enjoy just
pausing here, listening to the
birds, watching this big and
expressive sky.

It’s funny how photos can suggest
one thing, while the moments within
them can feel quite different. This
next set are from a solo walk along
to the harbour after picking up
some meds from the vet. It was too
bright for me, too sunny. I don’t
like taking photos in this light.
And also, it felt too busy. You can’t
tell from these photos but there
were lots of people around: on the
beach, and a few on jet skies and on
boats. Clearly, this was all
outdoors, but there was still so
much that we weren’t allowed to do
at this stage, and after weeks of
being very solitary, this ‘busy-
ness’ felt strange and unsettling. I
didn’t linger.

This blue though.

This was the week where I became
slightly obsessed with taking
photos and videos of grasses.
Hayfever aside, there was something
beautiful about walking through
these meadow areas at the lagoons,
the grasses undulating in the
breeze and in this light. Yes, week
twenty five was all about these
simple moments.
