Il Sentiero del Viandante
First Step
Part 1
Mandello del Lario
Trekking
,
The Path of the Wayfarer is
a hiking trail consisting
largely of paths and mule
tracks that flanks the
eastern side of Lake Como,
starting from Abbadia
Lariana and ending in
Colico.  The complete
route is about 45 km long
and is usually covered in
stages.

,
,
The stage begins near the
church of San Martino,
south of the hamlet of
Borbino, in the municipal
area of Abbadia Lariana,
where there are signs for
the Sentiero del Viandante,
which climbs up a concrete
staircase in the very first
section.

The track leads to the town
of Borbino, which you
cross passing between old
houses and vegetable
gardens.  The mule track
resumes its course crossing
the Val Monastero and
reaching the chapel of the
Madonna di Caravaggio.
Here the path becomes a
real road that leads to the
hamlet of Novegolo.

Now follow the road that
descends passing under the
Superstrada 36.
Immediately afterwards,
turn right into via Volta,
which you follow for a
short distance, until you
reach the grassy path that
runs parallel to the lake
shore.  An uphill stretch on
a paved road leads to the
church of San Giorgio, with
its wonderful cycle of
frescoes.

Beyond the church, take a
road on the right, climbing
until you reach and cross
the freeway, then turn left,
taking a small road that
leads near the cemetery of
Zana.  Here you follow the
carriage road reaching the
hamlet of Maggiana, in the
municipality of Mandello
del Lario, which you can
admire passing through the
square of the church of San
Rocco and then along via
Vittorio Veneto, finally
exiting the town to cross a
terraced area cultivated
with  lives.

The route then goes up to
the meadows of Masso and,
after passing a stream, to
the houses of Roccolo and
to the hamlet of Rongio,
from where you descend
towards the bottom of Val
Meria and then go up to
the hamlets of Somana and
Sonvico.

From Sonvico we walk up
a grassy saddle, reaching
the chapel of the
Immaculate Conception.
Subsequently, the itinerary
becomes paved for a long
stretch, crossing the ridge
parallel to the shore of the
lake.

,
At the end of the asphalted
stretch, follow the path that
descends to the left,
entering the wood and
continuing to a crossroads,
where there is the so-called
chapel of the Lord and a
fountain (420 m).

The itinerary follows a
mule track on the right,
which climbs until it meets
the freeway and passes it
thanks to an underpass.

The ground becomes
cobbled again and, having
now reached the Lierna
basin, crosses the hamlets
of Sornico (301 m) and
Genico (319 m) to then
descend to the center of
Lierna from where you can
easily reach the railway
station.
