The city of Pisa is known worldwide for its famous Leaning Tower. It is part of the Piazza dei Miracoli, a monumental complex testifying to the power of the city during the Middle Ages. Indeed, Pisa was an important maritime center in the 12th and 13th century.
It is in fact the campanile of the adjacent cathedral. The construction began in 1173. It is about 56 meters high and has 8 floors. Its famous inclination is due to a defect of the foundation and/or a subsidence of ground. The tower is recognized as a symbol of Italy as well as a masterpiece of Romanesque Tuscan marble art.
This Pisan Romanesque cathedral was built from 1063. Its facade consists of four galleries of columns and arrangements of polychrome marbles.
Its architecture testifies to the commercial and political agreements of the city at the time because it has classical, Islamic, Lombard and Byzantine elements.
