Medieval Charm

Here we're in Klausen / Chiusa.
(German)            (Italian)
,
A small town in South Tyrol in North Italy, Klausen is all
about medieval architecture, narrow lanes,
traditional inns & beautiful facades.

It's an artist's retreat.

The medieval town of Chiusa is also
known as “Dürerstädtchen,” or the city
of Dürer.

In 1494, the famous artist Albrecht Dürer
climbed the slopes of the Tschanberg
mountain above the town and there,
intoxicated by the magnificent
landscape, he made a drawing of the
town of Chiusa.

Unfortunately, this work of art was lost -
but at the place where the artist stayed,
the Dürerstein stone stands in
remembrance.

A walk up to the Säben monastery, the landmark of
Klausen, is a must. Interestingly, it was inhabited
before Christ.

The convent is still inhabited to this day by the
nuns and thus some areas are out of bounds.
