Coimbra is the oldest university city in Portugal. Its narrow and steep streets that cover the hill of Alcaçoba are populated by students. The university and the main cathedrals are located in the magnificent historic center.
This sumptuous Baroque library is considered one of the most beautiful in the world. It was built in 1717-18 and contains over 300 000 works. Its many shelves are made of exotic wood covered with gilding. It is unfortunately forbidden to take pictures inside.
