CAP MODERNE

Roquebrune-Cap-Martin

On the other side of the bay from Monaco, there
is an incredible cultural and natural site now
known as Cap Moderne and consisting of Eileen
Gray’s villa E-1027, Le Corbusier’s Cabanon and
Holiday Cabins, and the bar-restaurant Etoile de
Mer, all of them mythical architectural icons.
Suspended in time, in the blue of the sea and in
the scent of the Mediterranean.

Icon of modernist architecture, villa E-1027, is
Eileen Gray’s first architectural creation and
testifies to the thought and attention that she
put into every detail of the design. Everything is
designed to enjoy as much as possible the beauty
of the sea and the garden, a beauty you can really
dive in, smell or see. There is nothing luxury in the
vulgar sense of the term, the exceptional value of
the home is in the absolute freedom it transmits,
in the desire to take off your clothes and feel the
sun on your skin.

In 1956, in exchange for the plot of land on which
he erected the Cabanon, Le Corbusier built five
holiday cabins as a prototype of leisure living. The
interior of the cabins is designed on some of the
same principles as the Cabanon.

The Cabanon. “ A house, a palace”. Beneath the
single-slope roof of the Cabanon, a working area,
a resting area, lavatory, wash-basin, a table,
storage cupboards and a coat-rack are
concentrated into a square cell measuring 3.66m
by 3.66m and 2.26m high. Nearby
A few meters away is Le Corbusier's studio, with
its yellow and white door and large window
opening onto the sea.

The panoramic terrace overlooking the sea, the trellis,
the reed screening, bar and terraced garden: the Etoile
de Mer is the perfect example of the art of living of the
humble cottage dweller on the Mediterranean.
