American Prairie Reserve is a conservation nonprofit working to establish a fully functioning prairie ecosystem complete with the wildlife that once roamed these lands. APR will stitch together almost 3 million acres of public land with surrounding private land to create one of the world's largest protected prairie ecosystems, collaboratively managed for wildlife and recreation.
My first two nights were in the Lewis and Clark Cabin on the PN Unit. I spent my days exploring the endless miles of public lands surrounding this area.
The big draw for the Antelope Creek Campground is the close proximity to the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge. Every fall, bull elk descend on this area to show off their best bugles in hopes of continuing their genes into the next generation.
I spent my last full day with American Prairie by tagging along with APR's Senior Bison Restoration Manager Scott. I learned about the herds and their importance to the prairie landscape, and got a taste of what this land would have been like thousands of years ago.
